The Battle over Burrup Hub

Alex Hillman provided expert commentary in the recent ABC Four Corners on Woodside’s Burrup Hub.

The Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia has become critical in the nation’s battle against climate change - with protesters escalating their responses to the proposed expansion of a massive gas project there.

Woodside believes it is crucial for the stability of international energy markets and Australia’s transition to net zero. But over its lifetime it’s estimated the hub will emit the equivalent of 24 coal-fired power stations operating for 50 years.

ACCR’s lead analyst, Alex Hillman told Four Corners:

“When I say I can’t think of a bigger climate change decision an Australian will ever make, it’s a sincere opinion. It’s massive.”

What do we need to know about stranded assets?

Stranded assets existed before the need to consider the risks of climate change, like when typewriters were replaced by computers, but new situations have emerged that can cause assets to lose value earlier than envisioned.
